Facet Joint Injections

Our spine contains interlocking components that allow it to bend and move. The three main parts are the vertebrae, spinal discs, and facet joints. The facet joints are between each vertebra and allow free dynamic movement as needed. Facet joint injections begin with a local anesthetic and long-lasting steroid being administered into the affected facet joints using an extremely precise imaging technique known as Fluoroscopy. This helps by reducing pain, inflammation, swelling, and irritation in the area over the next 3-5 days. Facet Joint Injections

Facet joint injections can be used to treat facet arthritis, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and injury or trauma to the spine. The injection also serves as a diagnostic tool: if pain significantly reduces after the injection, it confirms the joint as the likely pain source, guiding a more accurate treatment plan.

The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis — patients return home the same day without a hospital stay. For patients who don’t experience sufficient relief, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is another option that uses heat to disrupt the nerve’s ability to transmit pain signals, providing longer-lasting relief.
