Medial Branch Nerve Block Injections

Fluoroscopy is a live X-ray technique that allows our specialists to see the precise location of the needle in real time, given the small size and complex location of the medial branch nerves. Some patients also receive a corticosteroid along with the anesthetic to reduce inflammation and prolong the benefits of the injection. The procedure is performed in-office, takes less than 30 minutes, and typically does not require sedation.

One key advantage is the dual diagnostic and therapeutic function: if a patient experiences temporary relief after the injection, it strongly suggests the pain originates in the facet joints, guiding further treatment. If the initial injection is successful, patients may be candidates for a follow-up procedure called radiofrequency ablation, which heats the medial branch nerves to disable their ability to send pain signals, offering longer-term relief for up to 12 months or more.

Conditions that may benefit include chronic neck pain, lower back pain, arthritis of the spine, and pain following spinal injuries, especially for patients who have tried other conservative treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic care, or oral medications without success. Side effects, if any, are usually mild and temporary, including soreness at the injection site or a temporary increase in pain before relief sets in.
