Peripheral nerve block injections for pain management work similar to nerve blocks used for anesthesia purposes. The idea is to block signals to the brain by inserting an anesthetic and/or long-lasting steroid near the nerves. To perform the procedure, Fluoroscopic or ultrasound imaging is used to direct and guide the injection to the correct position. The anesthesia can offer quick relief from pain while the steroid may offer a long-lasting reduction of peripheral nerve pain for a few or several months, depending on the condition and patient.
